Fruits of the Trade

Going through the police academy has given me a chance to encounter some unique laws. Some historical in nature dating back to Texas law when it was an independent nation to current ones that reflect the growth of our modern society. Here I submit a little gem for your review. Enjoy
Texas Statutes - Section 463.001: CONTRIBUTING TO DELINQUENCY OF HABITUAL DRUNKARD; CRIMINAL PENALTY
(a) In this section, "delinquency" means any act that tends to debase or injure the morals, health, or welfare of a habitual drunkard and includes:
(1) drinking intoxicating liquor;
(2) entering or remaining in any bawdy house, assignation house, disorderly house, roadhouse, hotel, or public dance hall where prostitutes, gamblers, or thieves are permitted to enter and ply their trade;
(3) entering a place where intoxicating liquors are kept, drunk, used, or sold;
(4) associating with thieves and immoral persons;
(5) causing a habitual drunkard to leave home or to leave the custody of the drunkard's parents, guardian, or person acting for the drunkard's parents or guardian without first receiving their consent or against their will; or
(6) causing the habitual drunkard, by undue influence, to unlawfully cohabit with a person known by the actor to be a habitual drunkard.
(b) A person commits an offense if the person by any act or in any manner encourages, causes, acts in conjunction with, or contributes to the delinquency, dependency, or neglect of a habitual drunkard, regardless of the drunkard's previous convictions.
(c) An offense under this section is punishable by a fine of not more than $500, confinement in jail for not more than one year, or both.

We encountered this today in class, and the discussion was brought up that, although prostitutes are illegal and gambling is controlled or illegal one might find a use for this law. Now there may be a derth of whore houses, back alley gambling halls, and speak eases. But, I would submit that there is a very applicable place this law can be used. Because all through out this nation there are places where all of the following things are permitted and encouraged to happen. There is even a whole profession that it is based around...

Lawyers.. yes that is right, and their law offices. Where else do you find an environment where prostitutes, gamblers and thieves are encouraged to 'ply their trade' where else are people PAID to protect their interests and promote the future of these activities. Who else would work so hard to negate the much needed help for the lowly drunkard? Lawyers and their dens of ill repute. Beware my friends, you might find yourselves in close proximity to one of these pillars of social degradation! Now, we can see that justice is indeed blind..
I now know where I'll be hunting for these social predators.

Be vigilant citizens!

  1. You crack me up, Joe. So then what does it mean that our brother almost became a lawyer?

  2. I think we would be mortal enemies.. fighting each other in grand scenes where there would be swords and unnatural jumping/flying involved. We would plot against each other, and someone's girlfriend/wife would die. The climax will involve buildings blowing up and a lot of shattered glass.

    I think John Wo has been contracted for the film, and the movie rights are being negotiated.

    :P
